Our Department is the only one specialized department in the Middle East and Africa Continent dedicated for plastic education and plastic processing research. It provides polymer education for both undergraduate, and post- graduate level and track record for state-of-the art research on novel polymeric materials, processing technology, and characterization methods. The Department was founded in the early 2000’s, just two years after Oil production in Sudan had been launched, to face the demand for plastic and polymer engineers. Currently, the Department has 13 academic staff (3 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer, 4 Tutors and 5 technicians) who actively engaged in teaching, research and consultation for about 220 undergraduate students.
The Department is presently housed in the north campus of the college of Engineering at Khartoum North, Alengaz Street .The Department awarded in the past academic year 2004/2005 about 17 B. Eng.(honors) degrees in Plastic Engineering. Our graduates are spread all around the Sudan and have established themselves at academic institutions and industrial and federal laboratories. The Department also offers M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Plastic Engineering by research. In the nearest future, the department will develop a strong set of M.Sc. Course in Plastic Engineering Technology at post-graduate programs and a research focus. Students enrolled in the Plastics Engineering program receive an education that is a well-rounded balance of Engineering and design fundamentals, hands-on processing and testing experience, and a strong plastics materials background.
The Department of Plastic Engineering is dedicated to providing the global society with leadership technology for a broad base of commercially viable polymer-related materials, processes and products through the development and application of our core competencies, which include education, research, analysis, modeling, design, synthesis and performance testing.The objective of both our academic and research functions is the practical application of scientific and Engineering principles to generate new material and processing concepts and enhance technical problem solving capabilities related to the production and use of polymers. Department activities range from basic compounding, extrusion, molding processes, the fundamental aspects of polymer physics, analysis, characterization, mechanisms, properties and rheology to the utilitarian functions of Engineering, manufacturing, design and performance. The Department is dedicated to producing high quality graduates equipped to make significant contributions to the quality of life throughout the Middle East and Africa world by their contributions to the Engineering profession.
