The department of Textile engineering has been first established in 1971 as Textile Technicians Institute as part of Sudan government plan to develop the Sudan Textile industry in a move to manufacture the bulk of the Sudanese cotton , which is known globally by itís superior quality.
In 1975 Khartoum Technical Institute has been established, and the textile Technical Institute has become a department under the college of Engineering studies, to grants a 3-years diploma in Textile technology, in filed of mechanical or chemical Textile. In 1984 the program has been approved.
In 1990 the Sudan university of Science and technology has been established to replace Khartoum Technical Institute. The Department of Textile Engineering is carryout as a part of the college of Engineering , grants a B.Sc. honor in Textile engineering in ten semesters.
The department has a separated campus in Khartoum North, Industries area with a 21 Staff members specialize in Spinning, Weaving, Dyeing and Finishing.
The Department has a good Teaching facilities including

- Weaving Workshop
- Dyeing house
- Testing laboratory
- Chemical Textiles laboratory
- Computer laboratory
The department also offer M.Sc by course and dissertation in Textile Engineering as well as M.Sc and ph.D by research. The 3-years diploma course in Textile Engineering is run and offerd by the College of Technology.
